Jean-Monnet Podcast
Since the winter semester 2024/25, podcast episodes on the EU's value-based neighbourhood and trade policy in particular and on international economic law in general have been published at irregular intervals.
You can find our the podcast under "Der Jean-Monnet Podcast" on Youtube and Spotify .
Law After Lunch
The course takes place irregularly during the lecture period four to six times on Thursdays (exceptions are possible) from 1 to 2 p.m. in the Dozentenbibliothek Öffentliches Recht (Juridicum, 1st floor). It provides information and discussions about current topics from international, transnational and European economic law. All students and staff are invited!
Seminar: Legal Aspects of Relations between Europe and Africa
In the Summer Semester 2026, Prof. Dr. Christian Tietje, LL.M. (Michigan), will offer a seminar on the topic "Legal Aspects of Relations between Europe and Africa." More than 25 years after the first Africa–Europe Summit, held on 3–4 April 2000, this topic remains particularly relevant.

Workshop "Women in the Digital Economy"
On June 26, Dr. Martha B. Hailu, guest professor at the chair of Prof. Dr. Tietje, organized an interesting workshop for students on "Women in the digital economy". Topic such as access to education and AI Governance, the inclusion of African women entrepreneurs in digital trade, and Ethiopia's readiness assessment and opportunities for women traders have been discussed.

9th Young European Law Scholars Conference (YELS)
On June 18 and 19 2026, the 9th edition of the Young European Law Scholars Conference took place at MLU. Young legal scholars from all over Europe discussed the topical issue of foreign and security policy of the EU with a special emphasis on "economic security". Doctoral Seminar Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
This year's doctoral seminar at Addis Ababa University (AAU) from 7-8 May adressed topics such as resource questions of landlocked states or overcapacity regulation.

On 23 April 2026, Prof. Dr. Christian Calliess held a presentation on the topical issue of the future of the European Union. Subsequently, there was an engaging discussion with the participants. The lecture can be watched on our YouTube channel .

During the winter semester 2025/2026, Prof. Dr. Christian Tietje offered a seminar adressing the topic "Economic Security as new paradigm in EU law and international economic law".

Addis Ababa 2025
PhD Workshop in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
From May 22 to May 23 2025, doctoral students of the Martin Luther University in Halle, visited our partner university, Addis Ababa University (AAU), in Ethiopia together with Prof. Dr. Christian Tietje. Together with the Ethiopian PhD-candidates, they participated in a PhD-Colloquium and presented their theses.
Seminar: "European and Public International Law in times of Crisis"
During the winter semester 2024/25, Prof. Dr. Christian Tietje, L.L.M (Michigan) and Dr. Robert Böttner offered a seminar with regard to "European and Public International Law in times of Crisis".
Conference: Deep Seabed Mining Disputes
On February 21, 2025, a one-day conference on “Deep Seabed Mining Disputes” was held at Bucerius Law School in Hamburg. The conference began with a keynote speech by Rüdiger Wolfrum. Afterwards two panels on the UNCLOS dispute resolution system, as well as a discussion on the role of the principle of the common heritage of mankind in deep sea mining were held.

"Winterschool" in Baku, Azerbaijan
This year's Winterschool was a complete success! The focus was on the exciting topics of "Constitutional dimensions of property protection" and "International investment protection as property protection". Together with great partners and dedicated students, we experienced an intensive week full of enriching discussions, interactive workshops and practice-oriented lectures.
Around 60 law students from Azerbaijan had the opportunity to engage intensively with the topic of property protection in lectures and workshops. Prof. Dr. Tietje, L.L.M. (Michigan) opened the camp with an introductory lecture on property protection in the German Basic Law. Dr. Robert Böttner and Darius Ruff, LL.M.oec., then led interactive sessions in which current property law case studies from Germany were discussed.
The Winterschool provided an excellent opportunity for professional exchange and in-depth discussion of important legal issues. We are proud to have been part of this enriching project!
Workshop "2024 UN Climate Change Conference (UNFCCC COP 29)" in Baku, Aserbaidschan
This years United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference was held from 11 to 22 November in the azerbaijani capital of Baku, where Prof. Dr. Tietje, L.L.M. (Michigan), together with Junior Prof. Dr. Azar Aliyev, was a participant. On November 14, he chaired the panel “Sustainable and Just Transitions: Innovations for a Greener Tomorrow”, which was organized by the Just Transition Center of the Martin Luther University Halle Wittenberg. The panel discussed interdisciplinary aspects such as technology, social sciences and law that need to be considered in the context of global warming.
Visit from James Bacchus
This year we had the great honor to welcome James Bacchus at our Institute for Business Law and Economic Law from November 11 to 13. James Bacchus is a former member of the Appellate Body of the World Trade Organization (WTO). As part of our lecture series “Law after Lunch”, Mr. Bachhus gave three presentations on current challenges in connection with the WTO. The event kicked off on 11 November at 2:15 pm with a presentation on the current crises facing the World Trade Organization. On November 12 at 14:15, trade and sustainable development - an explosive topic that shows how trade policy can contribute to sustainable global growth - was discussed. The third lecture on November 13 at 14:15 was about democracy and sustainable development. Here, participants were able to find out what role the promotion of democracy plays in trade policy and how this impacts global development.
PhD Seminar in Addis Abeba, Ethiopia
From May 23 - May 24 2024, doctoral students from the University of Halle-Wittenberg traveled to Ethiopia and gave presentations on their doctoral theses. The main topic of the event was "EU Value Oriented Neighborhood and Trade Policy".
Panel Discussion on the EU Deforestation Regulation and Ehtiopian Coffee
Currently it is questionable how the EU Deforestation Regulation will affect Ethiopian coffee suppliers. This question was explored in a hybrid panel discussion between Ethiopian and European scientists.
Seminar „Regionale Wirtschaftsintegration: African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and beyond
In the winter term 2023/24, Prof. Dr. Tietje, L.L.M. (Michigan) offered a seminar on topics in the context of regional economic integration, with a certain focus on Africa. The seminar took place as a block course at the end of the lecture period of the winter semester.

Conference on Natural Resources Law
Subsequent to the LithiumDays of the German Lithium Institute, the Conference on Natural Resources Law took place. It brought together academics and practitioners who were able to engage in lively discussions on current issues in raw materials law. The conference consisted of presentations by renowned academics and panel discussions on the lecture topics. The speakers included Prof. Dr. Anne-Christin Mittwoch, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Dr. h.c. Stephan Hobe, Prof. Dr. Robert Frau and PhD candidate Annika Fuchs. We were also particularly pleased to welcome the international speakers Prof. Dr. Islambek Rustambekov, who came from Tashkent (Uzbekistan), and Mr. Bachir Mouhyi from Casablanca, Morocco. The topics discussed included the Critical Raw Materials Act, sustainable raw materials trading based on the CSDDD, environmental, social and corporate governance and the legal conditions for extracting energy materials from space. It was an exciting and discussion-rich afternoon with fascinating presentations, which we will gladly repeat in this form in the future.
